棒術を推奨する本は多いが、棒の教本は殆ど見たことが無い。たまに見かけてもとても判り難い。
玄制流では棒術はやらなかったが、当時、玄制流のS.I先生が、恐らく百日紅だろうか、1.2mくらいの棒（枯れ枝）を道場に持って来られ、こう使うんだよと突く動作、左右から振り下ろす動作、相手を引っ掛ける動作等を見せて頂いたことがある。
当時小学生か中学生の時で、ブルースリーのヌンチャクが流行っていた時代である。S.I.先生は、空手をやっている人にはこちらの方が実用的だよ、とトンファーを持っての受け動作や突き、或いはトンファーの先端に持ち替えて、持ち手の部分で相手を引っ掛ける動作等を見せて頂いた。
S.I.先生は武器術にも興味を持っておられたようである。その影響もあって、昔から武器術には興味を持っていた。大学空手部では部室に棒が置いてあり、興味を持った。
