高校の空手部は平安の型をピンアンと称していたので、流派は船越義珍系以外であろう。協会関係の試合に出て結構良い成績を取っていたらしい。また、同高校にはボクシング部もあり、高2の時にそのキャプテンと友人となった。時々、蹴り抜きで空手部と試合をしていたそうで、その友人に言わせると「空手なんて楽勝」と言っていた。「蹴り有りならリーチも違うし、そうは言えないのでは？」と言ったが彼は何も言わず笑っていた。
大学で黒帯となってから近所で空手の小さな試合の募集があり、参加したことがある。拳に小手を嵌めて相手に軽く当てる、たぶん協会ルールだと思う。試合経験はなかったが、玄制流で自由組手をやっていたのでそれなりにはできるだろうと思っていた。
相手は茶帯の学生だったが競技空手の練習をしている人だったようで、軽く飛びながら鼻先にパッと突き手を伸ばしてくるやり方だった。小学生のころに遊びで相互に叩き合いをするような感じだったが避けられず鼻先を叩かれ、効きはしないが酷い目にあった。あの突きならボクサーのパンチの方が余程効くだろう。また、ボクサーは鼻先を叩かれるのには慣れているだろうから、それで怯むこともない。
大学空手部の友人は半年くらいボクシングジムに通っていたが、自分も少しボクシングをやっておけば良かったと時々思う。

The high school karate club referred to the Heian as Ping An, so the club would probably be something other than Gichin Funakoshi. The menbers of the club seemed to have performed quite well in association-related games. The high school also has a boxing club, which made friends with the captain during my second year of high school. At times, he was playing a match with the karate club without a kick, and he said, "Karate is an easy to win." "If they have a kick, they have a different reach, can't they?", But he laughed without saying anything.
After a black belt at a university, I participated in a small karate match in my neighborhood. Put on gloves on my fist and gently hit the opponent, probably an association rule. I didn't have any experience in the match, but thought that I could do it as I was doing free kumite in the Genseiryu.
The opponent was a brown belt student, but he seemed to be practicing competitive karate. He flew lightly and hitted my nose. When I was in elementary school, I felt like I was playing with each other, but I could not avoid hit, and it didn't work. But the punch would be better with a boxer punch. Also, boxers will be used to hitting their nose, so they won't be scared.
A friend of the university karate club went to a boxing gym for about six months, but sometimes I wish I had done a little boxing.
