玄制流では約束一本組手から自由組手まで段階的に教えて頂いた。約束組手では、攻撃に対して受け手は一歩下がって受ける。これは相手との間合いを作れるので、合理的な受けと思っていた。ところが・・。
大学空手部での組手は、攻撃に対して受け手が一歩前に出て受けるやり方だった。上級生と下級生が組めば、相手が黒帯となる。さすがに最初は怖かった。また、構えたときの間合いも玄制流とは全く異なり、遠かった。
今思うと、玄制流は競技空手を前提にしていたのではないかと思う。昭和30年代に立ち上げられた流派である。空手は競技化され、日本空手協会が設立されて間もない頃である。祝嶺制献著の玄制流の新空手道教範では、試合の心得まで書かれている。
攻撃手に対して常に前に踏み込んで受ける。これは相手の外側に入れれば勝ったも同然だし、内側に入ればそこから目の前の相手に対する攻撃、取手からの投げ技等もできる。これが本来の首里手だったのではなかろうかと最近思っている。

In the Genseiryu, I was taught step by step from one promised kumite to free kumite. In the promised kumite, the recipient receives the attack one step down. I thought this was a reasonable method because it could make interval with the partner. However··.
Kumite in the university karate club was a way for the recipient to go one step in case receiving the attack. If senior and junior students are assembled, the opponent will be a black belt. As expected it was scary at first. In addition, when I set up, it was completely different from Genseiryu, and it was far away.
Now, I think that Genseiryu would be based on competition karate. It is a style launched in the 1955～1965s. Karate was turned into a competition and it was not long after the Japan Karate Association was established. In ”Shin Karatedo Kyohan（the new karate’s textbook of the Genseiryu)", written by Seiken Shukumine, there is even written information on the competition.
Always step forward on the attacker and receive it. This is the same as winning if you enter the outside of the opponent. Or you can attack the opponent in front of you, throw from the catching the opponent's hand, etc. from the inside. I have recently thought that this was the original Shurite.
